A PAMPHLET FROM MY LOCAL CHURCH CAME TODAY…
The Catholic Church on my street corner flooded our mail-boxes with this pamphet asking Richard Dawkins (Athiest) a series of questions and posing unanswerable statements:
It reads:
1. We agree, your God is a ‘delusion’:
It goes on to suggest Dawkins’ idea of God is just made up and therefore of course it’s not true, which is interesting because that seems to be the basis of all gods.
2. Jesus is the best evidence for God.
Under this one it basically says “there is lots of evidence for Jesus, so God must be real.” Gee whiz, you got us there church!
3. If evil doesn’t exist, how can religion be evil?
“Ha, we got you now Dawkins, if there is no evil who cares about the atrocities of the church.” Which in a way is simply accepting the church is filled with inherent evil but ignores that to get a petty jab at Dawkins wording.
4. Atheism is not unbiased:
It goes on to blame atheism for wars and peril, “Well your belief fails too!” Which it does, but this is a childish wank of an argument and simply avoids taking responsibility for the wars and pain caused by religion. All religions, cults, idea systems have their failings but you certainly don’t win brownie points for pointing out the pitfalls of others when there are so many in your own.
I think how childish this question sheet is becomes clear as it ends:
“Richard, why so angry.” It actually says that in the small print.
I replied with some questions of my own and popped them in the Church mail box, these questions might shed some light on why, indeed, the Catholic Church (and indeed many fundamentalist religions) makes people a tad hot under the collar. Forgive the sloppy handwriting, my questions are:
Dear Catholic Church:
1. Why do you excuse & hide child abuse?
2. Why do you fear women having power?
3. Do you really believe condoms help spread H.I.V?
These are the questions I wish were answered in public debates. I don’t really care if there is a god or not, I don’t care so much how the world started: The discussions we have should be about reality and what we can do to stop injustices that are plain for everyone to see. Why focus on what we don’t know when there is so much we do know that needs attention? Talk about that in your next argument, not whether or not there is an omnipotent being who, if he were employed by me to care for a planet of free-willed beings, should probably be sacked from his position due to lack of interest and intervention in the awful things we do to each other every day.
